Merz Slams US Iran Strategy, Claims Americans ‘Humiliated’ in Talks

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday voiced sharp criticism of the United States over its handling of the Iran conflict, arguing that Washington lacks a clear “exit strategy” and has been “humiliated” during dealings with Tehran.

Speaking during a discussion with students in the town of Marsberg, Merz suggested that Iran has outmaneuvered the US diplomatically. “Iranians are obviously very skilled at negotiating—or rather, very skillful at not negotiating—and then letting the Americans travel to Islamabad and leave again without any results,” he said, according to reports.

He went on to describe the situation as damaging to US prestige. “An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards,” he added.

Merz also expressed doubt that the conflict could be brought to a swift conclusion, pointing to what he sees as unexpected Iranian resilience and a lack of effective US planning. He said he does not believe the US can end the war quickly “because the Iranians are obviously stronger than expected, and the Americans clearly don’t have a truly convincing strategy in the negotiations either.”

The German leader further criticized the administration of Donald Trump, arguing that it failed to draw lessons from past military engagements in Afghanistan and Iraq. He suggested that entering the conflict without a defined plan has left the outcome uncertain.

“The problem with such conflicts is always this: You don’t just have to get in; you also have to get out. We saw that very painfully in Afghanistan, for 20 years. We saw it in Iraq,” Merz said.

“This whole thing is, at the very least, ill-considered, and I don't currently see what strategic exit the Americans are choosing.”

He also cautioned that the ongoing war involving Iran is having a noticeable impact on Germany’s economic performance, according to reports.
