IRGC Says It Thwarts Attempt to Smuggle US-Made Weapons from Northern Iraq

(MENAFN) Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Monday that it had intercepted an attempted weapons transfer from northern Iraq and confiscated a shipment of arms and ammunition near the border.

According to a statement carried by Iranian news agency and attributed to the IRGC Ground Forces’ public relations office, the operation was carried out in Baneh county in Kurdistan province following intelligence-led monitoring.

The IRGC said armed groups operating in northern Iraq were attempting to smuggle what it described as US-made weapons and ammunition into Iran.

It further claimed that these groups were acting “on behalf of the US and the Zionist regime,” though no supporting evidence was provided.

Authorities said a “large quantity” of weapons and ammunition was seized, but did not disclose specific types or quantities.

The IRGC also stated that intelligence efforts were ongoing to identify and detain individuals inside Iran allegedly cooperating with the groups involved in the operation.
