Syria’s FM Meets Kurdish Leader to Discuss Postwar Recovery, Economy
According to a source from the Syrian Foreign Ministry, the two officials focused on Syria’s postwar economic challenges and reconstruction, stressing the importance of strengthening economic and development ties in the near term.
Barzani reaffirmed his support for Syria’s unity and stability, describing them as “a fundamental pillar for the stability of Iraq and its Kurdish region alike,” the source said. He also praised measures taken by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, expressing “great satisfaction” with a recent presidential decree concerning the rights of Syrian Kurds.
In January, Sharaa issued a decree recognizing the cultural and linguistic rights of Syrian Kurds, addressing civil and legal issues affecting stateless residents, and resolving long-standing property rights disputes—a step aimed at fostering an inclusive state that guarantees citizens’ rights without discrimination.
Later that month, the Syrian government announced a “comprehensive agreement” with the YPG/SDF, intended to reduce internal divisions and promote integration. The agreement, covering northeastern cities including Hasakah and Qamishli and the integration of military forces, complements a previous deal signed on January 18.
