Macron Demands Iraq Probe Into French Soldier's Death in Phone Call

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron held a phone call with Iraq's newly designated Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi on Sunday, offering congratulations on his appointment while pressing for a sovereign and stable Iraq as a cornerstone of regional and European security.

Macron outlined the conversation publicly, writing on US social media platform X: "I spoke with Ali Zaidi, the Prime Minister tasked with forming the next Iraqi government. I congratulated him on his appointment and extended my best wishes for success in this decisive mission for Iraq's future, in a particularly demanding regional context," Macron wrote.

The French president also used the call to reiterate demands for accountability over an attack in March in Makhmour that killed one French soldier and left several others wounded — a case that remains unresolved and has added urgency to Paris' engagement with Baghdad.

Macron framed Iraq's political trajectory as inseparable from broader security interests stretching far beyond the region's borders.

"A stable, sovereign Iraq that is fully in control of its destiny is essential for the security of both the Middle East and Europe. France will continue to stand alongside the Iraqi people to help achieve this and to further deepen our strategic partnership across all areas," Macron added.

The call signals Paris' intent to maintain close diplomatic ties with Baghdad as Al-Zaidi embarks on the complex task of assembling a new government amid a volatile regional landscape.
