Rubio Says Tom Barrack to Remain Key US Diplomatic Figure on Syria, Iraq

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that Ambassador Tom Barrack will continue to serve as a major diplomatic point of contact on Syria and a trusted official on Iraq policy, according to reports.

Rubio said Barrack’s role would remain central to US engagement in the region, including his position as ambassador to Türkiye, while also supporting broader US strategic coordination with Syria and engagement with Iraq’s new government.

“He will continue to play a vital role, not only as our Ambassador to the Republic of Türkiye, but also as we advance the President's (Donald Trump) strategic cooperation with the government in Syria and begin our work with the new government in Iraq,” Rubio said in a public statement.

“He is an indispensable member of the President's team, carries my full confidence, and operates with the full backing of the State Department. The American people are well served by his continued willingness to lead this work,” he added.

Rubio had also previously indicated that Barrack would maintain a leading diplomatic role on Syria and Iraq even after the end of his formal special envoy mandate for Syria.

"Ambassador Tom Barrack has played an invaluable role as our Special Envoy to Syria," Rubio wrote, adding that “he will continue to play a leading role for the Trump Administration in both Syria and Iraq.”

According to reports, the comments were released as part of ongoing US efforts to restructure its diplomatic engagement in the region, with Barrack expected to remain a key figure in coordinating policy on both countries.
