US Envoy Hails Iraq’s Push to Disarm Militia Factions

(MENAFN) US Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq Tom Barrack on Wednesday welcomed a significant shift in Iraq's security landscape, praising Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi's push to bring armed factions under formal state authority.

"We extend our congratulations to Iraqi Prime Minister @AliFalihAlzaidy on this significant step forward, which represents the nascent foundation for a renewed Iraqi self-governance — grounded in restored sovereignty, enduring stability, and the promise of national renewal," Barrack, who also serves as US Ambassador to Türkiye, wrote on X.

He reserved separate praise for the armed groups that have voluntarily surrendered their weapons to the state.

"We likewise commend those groups whose principled decision to return all weapons to the Iraqi state will contribute to the architecture of order," he said.

Barrack further backed the Iraqi premier's judgment, saying Al-Zaidi's "confidence is well-placed" and characterizing the developments as "only the beginning."

The diplomatic endorsement follows a landmark announcement Tuesday by Asaib Ahl al-Haq — one of Iraq's most powerful and influential Shia political-military organizations — that it would form a dedicated committee to begin withdrawing from the Popular Mobilization Forces and transfer its arsenal to state control.

Founded in 2006 as an armed splinter faction from the Mahdi Army of the Sadrist movement under Qais al-Khazali, Asaib Ahl al-Haq becomes the second major group to announce such an integration. It follows Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who previously disbanded his "Peace Brigades" and folded them into the state's formal security architecture.
