Iraqi PM Hails Asaib Ahl al-Haq Move Toward State Alignment
In a statement, Zaidi described the step as a "national position" that supports the strengthening of official institutions and upholds the principle that the possession of arms should remain solely in the hands of the state.
According to reports, the prime minister said the move would help “reinforcing security and stability,” bolster the rule of law and support ongoing efforts to establish stronger institutions capable of serving the public effectively.
Zaidi also commended Iraq’s political and religious leadership for its role in promoting national cohesion and safeguarding the country’s stability during a period of political and security challenges.
The remarks followed an announcement by Asaib Ahl al-Haq on Tuesday that it would establish a committee tasked with overseeing its separation from the Popular Mobilization Forces and facilitating the transfer of its weapons to state control.
According to reports, Asaib Ahl al-Haq is among Iraq’s most influential Shia political and military groups. The movement emerged in 2006 after breaking away from the Mahdi Army affiliated with the Sadrist movement and led by Qais al-Khazali.
The decision is being viewed as a significant development in efforts to consolidate security authority under the Iraqi state and reduce the role of armed groups operating outside formal government structures, according to reports.
